Let’s go get some pedal powerrrrr…

So I somehow signed up to do some volunteer work – planting some trees. But you know, if we’re going to plant trees to help the environment, it’s kind of ironic if I drive there and actually let out more carbon dioxide. Hence the pedal power. Okay, so I probably need the exercise too but it’ll be cool…. gotta ride I think somewhere between 7-10KM to get there which isn’t to far… just coming home will be the painful part.

Gig week galore…

Well not quite, but having two gigs on consecutive nights starting the working week made for a very long week for me. That said, it was awesome – the gigs at least. Monday night was Snow Patrol and that was super cool. Kinda sucks that they only played stuff from Final Straw and Eyes Open, but they played all the good stuff….. Tuesday TV On The Radio at the Gaelic Club. Great fun there too. The rest of the week was pretty standard. Work, work the usual. This evening headed for drinks after work to GPO again… I think I have to get used to being the only chick who goes… meh

A post about everything – television

First thing to post is that I’ve spent a whole load of $ on food this week. I haven’t eaten a proper home cooked meal since Tuesday night, and I’ve eaten out every lunch since Tuesday (coincidentally as a result of not eating home cooked food). Highlights Wednesday night caught up with the uni dudes for dinner at Chinta Ria, Friday long lunch with the work guys down at some chinese place in Chinatown. But tomorrow I’m definatley going to eat at home… I feel like some roasted vegetables or something…

Now on the music front…. next week will be awesome… 2 gigs/shows on consecutive days…. Wednesday morning sure will be interesting…

And now on the nerd front – here’s some research on bloggers/blogging.

Adios for the week…………

Google Maps

Since I left high school back in 2002, I haven’t really coded anything for fun or out of my own curiosity/interest. I was kind of missing it, because that time of my life was when I learnt the most (that’s what I think/feel anyway). Well, it looks like I’m getting back into it… courtesy of Google Maps. About two months or so ago, Google started covering Australia which is awesome from a web programming perspective.

This development and the slight urge I had to find a techie interest again has kinda spawned Sydney Parks. It’s still very, very new, so I haven’t got many suburbs mapped yet, but it’s getting there.

Looks like I’ve jumped onto the mashup bandwagon…

Argh I’m so stupid…

I had an idea for a a Google Maps Mashup so I set about going about it yesterday thinking it was going to be pretty straight forward. Turns out I had to learn a bit a bout Ajax which was good/bad. Anyways so I had bits of my mashup working and I couldn’t for the life work out why a piece of code wasn’t working the way it should… half a day later it clicks…. the variable wasn’t global!……. argh……………..

Anyways back to the mashup it is… there were better ideas for mashups I had, but the lack of publically available data in Australia kinda sucks at that…

Friday night drinkos

So knocked of work round 5ish and headed down to the GPO for some drinks with people from my new team. Must admit at times it’s odd being in a male dominated industry ‘cos it often involves lone females surrounded by guys… (which I suppose could be both a good and bad thing???)… Then after than it was on to Bar 333 to drop in on a mate’s farewell drinks thingo… except that he worked at Maq Bank… which isn’t exactly where I work. That said, it was good fun – the people I met we’re all really nice and I had a good time. Oh….. and I actually downed a whole beer…. (big thing for me…… lol)

Google: Behind The Edge

Just watched this doco on Google on SBS. Was pretty interesting, as it also brought up a few interesting topics regarding privacy and the storage of personal information by google. I’m still sitting on the fence on that one, as I believe that to some extent we do have a bit of power in our choice of whether or not we use the tools/features provided by Google.

Watching this doco, brought me back to the (good?) old days. It had this montage of search engines etc from ages ago. Any pre-Googlers remember the days of AltaVista. Not to mention Dogpile, MetaCrawler etc…. ahhh the nostalgic memories… (well not quite)…

Either way, I’m still all for vouching that ‘Google is your friend…’

‘Goddesses’ spruik careers

‘Goddesses’ spruik careers
IT Screen Goddesses
SERIOUSLY?!? As a female working in the IT industry, that doesn’t exactly appeal to me. In fact if I were still a student seeing that could quite possibly turn me of the whole idea… or at least I would be thinking… n3rd al3rt…

Apparently it’s supposed to raise diversity of women in IT and raise funds for not for profit groups that encourage females to take up technology related pursuits…. um yeh… I could think of at least 5 other ways which would be alot more fun and convey non-geek to prospective females… calendars wasn’t exactly on the list…
